This event has been canceled.

Waberi’s first essays, stories, and novels appeared in French in the 1990s, and he has come to be recognized as one of Djibouti’s leading contemporary writers. Four of his books of fiction are available in English, and his first collection of poetry, The Nomads, My Brothers, Go Out to Drink from the Big Dipper, was published in English in 2015. Praised for evoking traditional Djibouti while also being unmistakably modern, that work highlighted Waberi’s effort to achieve a “unity of place and feeling.” He continues this project in his second volume of poems, a gathering of lyrics rich with both personal and socio-cultural resonance. Waberi, a professor of literature at George Washington University, will be in conversation with his translator, Nancy Naomi Carlson.
