An evening with Philip Boehm, translator of Arthur Koestler’s Darkness at Noon, Ingeborg Bachmann’s Malina, and Christine Wunnicke's The Fox and Dr. Shimamura — in conversation with Amy Stolls — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Monday, September 23, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Boehm, a Texas-born playwright and director, was staging plays in Poland in 1988 when he learned that a US publisher needed someone to translate Ingeborg Bachmann’s avant-garde masterpiece Malina into English. With no special training, aside from a dramatist's sensitivity to the nuances of voice, Boehm took the assignment and now has rendered over thirty works from German and Polish into award-winning English editions, translating authors like Bertolt Brecht, Franz Kafka, and Herta Muller. Join us for a discussion of literary translation in general and of the particular challenges behind his recently released work on Bachmann, Christine Wunnicke, and Arthur Koestler, whose long-lost complete version of Darkness at Noon was rediscovered in 2015 and now appears in English for the first time.

Boehm will discuss his work, followed by a broader conversation about translation with Amy Stolls, Director of Literary Arts at the National Endowment for the Arts.
