Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels from town to town in post-civil war Texas reading the news of the world to entranced audiences, looking for a distraction from the hard life on the frontier and the nasty local politics. But his life is upended when he accepts the task of returning Johanna, a 10-year-old German immigrant who had been raised captive by the Kiowa, to her family across the state. Captain Kidd, or Kep-dun, as Johanna calls him, is a gruff, hard, ex-printer who has been through three wars now, and the young girl is completely alien to white culture and a constant flight risk. Together, they make an unlikely, yet formidable and lovable pair in this beautifully written, fast-paced and fun novel.

After finishing this book, you will find it hard to not go out and run ten miles in Rock Creek. McDougall makes the case that humans evolved to be long distance runners, as our ancestors hunted exhausted prey on the fields of Africa. And that leads to the argument that humans have been running for thousands of years without injuries wearing only sandals or nothing at all. It is only with the rise of Nike that knee injuries became common. One of the top books about endurance running ever written, McDougall takes us on a wild ride through the sport, from the mountain trails of Colorado, to labs in Harvard, finally to the isolated Tarahumara tribe in Mexico’s Copper Canyon, and the race of a lifetime.

What if today was the day that you decided to turn your life around? Make the small changes you always wanted to, in order to become the woman you always wished you could be? Maria Semple’s protagonist Eleanor Flood, upon waking one morning, makes that promise to herself in Today Will Be Different (Little, Brown, $27). But, then, life has a way of charting its own course. Eleanor, a former cartoon illustrator, is attempting to resurrect her memoir from the depths of a creativity block. Over the course of one day, Eleanor is confronted with a former coworker who brings up some repressed secrets, a (faking) sick child finding his own identity, and a husband who has been skipping work behind her back for the past week. It is a novel that is light-hearted and quirky, while quietly raising the stakes throughout the day. Fans of Semple’s previous hit, Where’d You Go, Bernadette?, will love and identify with Eleanor’s struggles to maintain balance between a creative career, raising a child, and keeping a marriage fresh and exciting.
