My best friend and I have a long-standing argument about living forever. He’s pro; I’m con. What happens, I keep saying, if I run out of will to live, but can’t die? Conveniently, Dara Horn wrote a novel to answer that question for me. Rachel, the protagonist of Eternal Life, can’t die. She vowed to live forever in the days of the Second Temple, and now it’s been millennia, the Temple is the Wailing Wall, and Rachel, who lives in New York, would prefer to be dead. The story is as oddball as it sounds, and as tragic; it’s a tour of Jewish history and the human heart at once. It even has a happyish ending—but not too happy, thank God. I’m confident it will help me win my argument.

Leni Zumas has a great sense of prose style. A great sense of humor, too. The sentences in Red Clocks are so unexpected and elegant, they all but lift off the page. That would be an achievement in any book, but with this one, it’s just the beginning. Not only is the writing great, the storytelling is an absolute wonder. Zumas combines polar exploration with herbal medicine, feminist politics, and just the littlest bit of I-wish-it-were-dystopia-but-it-feels-pretty-real, and she pulls it off. You won’t be able to put her book down.

Carmen Maria Machado writes terrifying horror stories. She writes gorgeous meditations on nature, love, and art. She writes feminist allegory that would make Margaret Atwood proud and folktale adaptations that wouldn’t be out of place in the Brothers Grimm. And here’s the thing – she does it all at once. Every story in Her Body and Other Parties (Graywolf, $16) is a mind-bending mix of ideas and influences, and every one of them feels brand new. The magic of fiction is to take what we know and make it new, and Machado works that magic repeatedly and seamlessly. Her stories are a pleasure to read, even when they make the hair stand on the back of your neck. It’s always the good kind of fear.
