What happens when a farm in Ireland can only be left to one son? Well, the other sons and daughters reluctantly leave their home and take the voyage across the ocean to begin their new life and seek their fortune in America. They meet up with other homesick Irish in dance halls and begin the work of settling in. This is where we start the story of Nora and Theresa, two sisters who come to America and land in Boston, one forever longing for home and the best friend she left behind, and one determined to have her way in her new world. What happens next will forever bind the two sisters together and eventually force them apart. This is a spectacularly told family drama with a heavy dose of Catholic guilt and determination thrown in. J. Courtney Sullivan’s observations about families and their interactions are so spot-on, it’s hard to believe this author is so young. Saints for All Occasions is a triumph!

An 11-year-old Boy Scout takes on a project to assist a 104-year-old immigrant woman with her yard work on seven consecutive Saturdays. He is very socially awkward and finds a delightful friend in this alliance. The woman becomes smitten with his diligence and interest in her mundane life history, which he starts researching for a school project. Then one Saturday he doesn't show up, and the next week his father comes instead to finish out his obligation. What happened to the boy, and the bond that forms as a result, makes for a very good read. The One-in-a-Million Boy by Monica Wood is an unforgettable, charming, sweet, and sad story. I highly recommend it.

Anything Is Possible is the story of Lucy Barton, continued from Strout’s prior book My Name Is Lucy Barton, but this time it is told in short vignettes, Olive Kitteridge style. Some of her observations just slay me, and the side characters that appear are so real that you will be sucked into Lucy’s hometown immediately. This is Elizabeth Strout at her best, and nobody does it better! Olive Kitteridge and Lucy Barton fans will love this book.
