Beyond Black Broadway – The Other Side of Shaw Walking Tour

Presented by author Lauri Williamson and Politics and Prose

Saturday, September 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The Shaw neighborhood of Washington, D.C. was established largely due to Union Army encampments that housed or protected “Contrabands”, newly escaped slaves seeking a better life for themselves and their families.  The neighborhood continued to develop into one that plays a key role in the lives of African Americans in Washington, even today. Join Lauri Williamson, Author of “111 Places in Black Culture in Washington, DC that you Must Not Miss” for a broader look at a section of the neighborhood that is adjacent to U Street’s “Black Broadway”. This is where the father of Black History, Carter G. Woodson lived and entertained luminaries such as Langston Hughes and Mary McLeod Bethune, where neighborhoods of poor people filled the alleyways, and where the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom was planned.
