The work of fundraising has transformed into a sophisticated and competitive profession, attracting talented and dedicated leaders who wish to use their skills to contribute to a secure financial future for their organizations. The arts and cultural field has not been an exception to these pressures above all in times when new emergencies and pressures shrink the funding opportunities of arts organizations both in Europe and in the US. This book aims to be a reference point for upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and junior practitioners in the arts management field. It will provide core insights about and inspiration for careers in fundraising for the arts and high-quality content (including on advanced topics such as the organizational dynamics of creating a culture of philanthropy, E-D-I in fundraising, the use of digital and social media platforms, board involvement, performance management and accountability) that will appeal to novice or experienced practitioners.
Mark Volpe served as President and CEO of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from September 1997 until June 2021. In his role, he was responsible for all activities of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, and Tanglewood as well as the real estate holdings of the BSO, the most extensive of any orchestra in the world. During his tenure, the BSO reaffirmed its status as one of the world’s leading orchestras. In 2017, he was elected to the 237th class of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the first-ever chief executive of an orchestra to receive this honor. Francesca Pecoraro is a performing arts manager, with a specific sectorial skill in Opera Management. She defines herself as a passionate and eclectic professional, with a deep interest in the Arts, nurtured at different levels. After her Bocconi Master of Science in Economics and Management for the Performing Arts (2008), she has worked in digital marketing and community management serving – after an experience in consulting – the Marketing Department of Piccolo Teatro in Milan and collaborating with some Performing Arts Festivals. Alex Turrini is professor in arts policy and in management and Director of the MSc in Arts and Cultural Management at Bocconi University. He has been visiting chair of the SMU Meadows Division of Arts Management and Arts Entrepreneurship as well as visiting professor of arts management and cultural policy at SMU Meadows and Cox School of Business. He carried forward several research, training and consulting projects with different national and international public sector organizations involved in the arts.
