How do you fit the world into 1,000 words or less? In this four-week online course, you'll explore the genre of flash fiction and create your own compact masterpieces. Topics include the elements of flash, tips for working within the constraints of flash, strategies for workshopping and revision, and opportunities for further reading and potential publication. You will write multiple flashes from prompts, and with feedback, polish them into small, bright gems of your own.

Class will meet online in four separate Zoom sessions lasting one hour each. Before the first meeting, and in between meetings, students will read published stories, which we’ll discuss in class. Writing prompts will also be introduced in the online sessions, from which participants will produce their own flash stories, receiving feedback from the instructor via e-mail.
