Reston follows A Rift in the Earth with a timely account of the impeachment process against Richard Nixon. Drawing on his diaries from the period, Reston revisits the 1973 Senate Watergate Committee hearings and subsequent trials, Supreme Court deliberations over executive privilege, and House Judiciary Committee hearings on the articles of impeachment, offering unique insight about the impeachment process, from the time it takes to form consensus to the steps necessary for impeachment to occur. The volume also includes the three articles of impeachment approved by the House Judiciary Committee, the two voted down, and Reston’s Washington Post op-ed arguing for an omnibus article of impeachment encompassing the entire case against Nixon for "the abuse of powers that only a president possesses."
