Mikhal Dekel - Tehran Children: A Holocaust Refugee Odyssey

Upcoming Event
Saturday, October 12, 2019 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

Dekel, author of The Universal Jew and professor of English at City College of New York and the CUNY Graduate Center, draws on family history and recently opened archives to tell the almost-unknown story of the Jews who escaped the Nazis by fleeing east, first into Soviet-occupied Poland and then into the Soviet Asian Republics. One of those million-plus Jewish Polish refugees was Dekel’s father, and as she follows him through the gulag-like resettlement camps to Iran and, ultimately, Palestine, she illuminates the global politics behind this odyssey and tells the moving story of the friendship between a Jewish Israeli and a Muslim Iranian writer, both deeply traumatized by exile.
