P&P Live! Andrea Davis Pinkney & Brian Pinkney-Loretta Little Looks Back—in conversation with Jason Reynolds

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, September 30, 2020 - 7:00pm

Join us for an unforgettable discussion between the award-winning Pinkney team and Jason Reynolds, the Library of Congress’ National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.

Meet Loretta, Roly, and Aggie B –who share their long family history. It begins with Loretta’s “truth-talking” in the 1920s, continues with Roly in the 1940s, and concludes with Aggie B. coming of age as a committed voting rights activist. Drawing on oral histories and interviews, this beautifully illustrated novel blends fictional first-person narratives, spoken-word poems, folk myths, gospel rhythms, and blues influences. It is a stirring exploration of the violence of the Jim Crow South, the sharecropping system, the long struggle for African American voting rights, and the different forms bravery and love can take.

Andrea Davis Pinkney and Brian Pinkney have published nearly 60 children’s books between them, both as individuals and as an author-artist team. Their beloved works include Martin Rising: Requiem for a King; Hand in Hand: Ten Black Men Who Changed America; Boycott Blues: How Rosa Parks Inspired a Nation; Martin & Mahalia; and Sojourner Truth’s Step-Stomp Stride. Andrea Pinkney is the vice president and editor-at-large for Scholastic Trade Books.

Jason Reynolds’ explosively popular, award-winning middle grade and young adult novels include When I Was the Greatest, Long Way Down, the Track series, As Brave as You, and Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks. Born and raised in the Washington, DC area, he discovered his intense love of poetry when he was nine years old.
