P&P Live! Ger Duany-Walk Toward the Rising Sun: From Childhood Soldier to Ambassador of Peace—with The Peace Studio in conversation with Jeffrey Gettleman

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, September 22, 2020 - 12:00pm

Join us for a conversation with Ger Duany and Jeffrey Gettleman in partnership with The Peace Studio about Walk Toward the Rising Sun: From Child Soldier to Ambassador of Peace.

Join actor, author, model, and UN Goodwill Ambassador Ger Duany as he and Pulizter Prize-winning journalist Jeffrey Gettleman discuss his groundbreaking young adult memoir. Forcibly recruited as a child soldier in Sudan’s north-south civil war, Duany left the country as a refugee at the age of 14. Arriving in the US in the 1990s, he battled PTSD and endured racism in America even as his talents for basketball, modeling, and acting thrust him into the spotlight. In his powerful coming-of-age story, Duany explores themes of trauma, heartbreak, injustice, fame, identity, and hope.

Jeffrey Gettleman, a winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2012 for international reporting, is The New York Times’s South Asia bureau chief, based in New Delhi. His work has appeared in National Geographic, GQ, Foreign Policy, and The New York Review of Books. He was previously the East Africa bureau chief, based in Kenya, from 2006 to 2017. He is the author of Love, Africa, a memoir about his experiences in Africa and a whole bunch of other things.

We are thrilled to partner on this event with The Peace Studio, a non-profit that supports artists, journalists, and storytellers as active peacebuilders. The event will open with a message from two special guests and include a musical interlude inspired by Duany’s memoir performed by classical guitarist Alberta Khoury. This musical interlude is also a part of The Peace Studio's 100 Offerings of Peace Campaign, which commissions creatives to generate new works about what peace means to them for online viewing between July 1 and November 1, 2020.
