P&P Live! : Julia Alvarez - Afterlife — in conversation with Jaquira Díaz

Upcoming Event
Monday, April 6, 2020 - 6:00pm

This event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series.

Awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Obama in 2013, Alvarez, also the recipient of a Latina Leader Award in Literature from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and the Hispanic Heritage Award in Literature, has written poetry, fiction, and memoir for both adults and younger readers, including the classic In the Time of the Butterflies. In her new novel she follows Antonia Vega, an American-Dominican writer, who finds that life after retirement from teaching is not what she expected. First, her husband dies. Then one of her three sisters disappears. While books still provide some measure of comfort and meaning, it’s only when she takes in a pregnant undocumented teenager that she finds answers to the larger questions her recent experiences have posed. Alvarez will be in conversation with Jaquira Díaz, author of Ordinary Girls.
