Told in verse, this companion memoir to Free Lunch and Punching Bag tells the compelling, sometimes heartbreaking but ultimately heartwarming story of Ogle’s relationship with his Abuela, who was his childhood champion and support as she helped him escape a childhood of poverty, shame and abuse. Abuela, Don’t Forget Me is the portrayal of familial love tested by horrifying circumstance that lives on even when his grandmother is beginning to lose her memories of its bonds.

Rex Ogle is the award-winning author and the writer of nearly a hundred children’s books, comics, graphic novels, and memoirs—including his novel, Free Lunch, which was the Winner of the 2020 YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award. Born and raised (mostly) in Texas, he moved to New York City after college to intern at Marvel Comics before moving over to DC Comics, Scholastic, and Little Brown Young Readers. He currently lives in Los Angeles where he writes full time.

Deborah D. Taylor, a Politics & Prose contributing moderator, retired from the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, MD. She has chaired and served on many American Library Association committees and on the National Book Awards jury for young people’s literature. She was named the 2015 recipient of the Coretta Scott King/Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement. She is a reviewer and currently serves as the chair of the Ezra Jack Keats Awards Committee.
