Reuben Jackson - Scattered Clouds: New and Selected Poems & Brian G. Gilmore - Come See About Me, Marvin — at Politics and Prose at Union Market

Upcoming Event
Sunday, November 17, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Jackson, former archivist and curator with the Smithsonian’s Duke Ellington Collection, a longtime teacher at the Writer’s Center, and a frequent presence on WPFW, has been an important influence on several generations of younger Black poets through both his musical expertise and his own poetry. His new book showcases his extraordinary achievements, spanning his career from his first collection, fingering the keys—included here in full—to his acclaimed poem “For Trayvon Martin,” his set of elegiac, celebratory reflections on his late friend, Amir Yasin, and many previously uncollected recent poems.

The author of three collections of poetry and the recipient of Cave Canem and Kimbilio fellowships, Gilmore was raised in D.C. and now teaches social justice law at Michigan State University. His new book chronicles his adjustment to the Midwest by invoking the spirit of Marvin Gaye—another Black man who left Washington roots to build a career in the Midwest. Starting with “love that will shelter you,” Gilmore presents the daily realities of life in his new state, explores the region’s past, and finally, in “let your love come shining through," articulates a vision of hope.
