Join Bruce Beehler [author of Birds of North America: A Photographic Atlas, and also Birds of Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia] on a guided bird walk in the heart of Rock Creek Park. This bird walk will encounter an assortment of locally-breeding birds as well as the mid-spring migrants that pass through the DC area in May. The walk will cater to those who have never been on a bird walk in DC and who want to learn what all the excitement is about. Birds will be in song and easy to find, and the leader will help participants see and identify the birds with the use of a spotting telescope. It is expected that the walk will encounter at least 35 species of birds, including vultures, hawks, songbirds, flycatchers, sparrows, warblers, vireos, woodpeckers, and more.

The tour will begin at the parking lot of the Rock Creek Nature Center, just south of Military Road, a 6-minute drive from Politics and Prose bookshop. We will gather the group in the parking lot, and do some initial birding right there in the oak woods of the Center. We will then drive to the parking lot of the Maintenance Yard just to the south and visit Rock Creek Park’s most famous birding hotspot, known as the Capitol Ruins, where marble remnants left over from the building of the National Capitol are scattered about in the clearing, which is excellent for birds.

The tour will wrap up at the Rock Creek Park Area 18 picnic area, another birding hotspot favored by the city’s best birders. The Rock Creek Park Bird Walk will take place, on Sunday, June 2nd, starting at 8 a.m., and is expected to last 2 hours. Participants should check the weather forecast in advance to determine appropriate outerwear for the morning. Bring binoculars if you have them (and practice with them in your backyard if need be before the event) Because the tour involves about a mile of walking, we recommend bringing good walking shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, and water in a small daypack.

The price for the tour $50.

The leader will be happy to sign copies of his books before and after the walk.

The participants should meet at the parking lot of the Rock Creek Nature Center 10 minutes prior to the start of the walk, but those arriving late will be able to locate the group, which will be spending the first 20 minutes right around the Nature Center.
