Days at the Morisaki Bookshop, by Satoshi Yagisawa

Staff Pick

Yagisawa's delightful novel gently carries the reader through the joys that ground and enrich the reading life. It follows twenty-something Takako who, as her days are suddenly turned upside-down, finds solace and a new sense of self at her family’s used-book store. There, she slowly but surely falls in love with Japanese literature, assisted by her charming, biblio-obsessed curmudgeon of an uncle who helps her break out of her shell by introducing her to books (as he does also the reader; titles, authors, and a few synopses are included here), to the shop’s devoted patrons, and to the neighborhood's quaint shops and coffee houses. Full of vivid details that bring each scene to life and highlight the subtle differences between America and Japan, this is fiction that goes down easy.
