The Dragon Waiting, by John M. Ford

Staff Pick

It's taken me a year to write this, because I can't put into words the experience of reading this book--one I wanted never to end. It's the smartest, strangest approach to alternate history I've ever read, and I adored it. Yet for all the vampires and druids involved, this is not just an “our world but with magic added” kind of vision.  Rather, The Dragon Waiting is a book of seemingly small changes to history that ripple outward to shift the entire scope of reality. Ford’s attention to historical detail is remarkable, and I recommend seeking out the “Draco Concordans” (a free, online, fan-written guide) for help with all you don’t remember about 15th century European history.  I also recommend Josephine Tey’s Daughter of Time as a good (non-fantasy) read-along if you’re prepared to become a Richard III apologist.
