The Peacock Feast -- Lisa Gornick

Staff Pick

In 1916 Louis C Tiffany held a peacock feast where children dressed as miniature chefs served silver platters of roasted peacock decorated with their own plumage.  The repercussions of this vulgar extravaganza carry across generations, in the lives of Tiffany's daughter Dorothy and more importantly, in the family of Tiffany's head gardener - his daughter Prudence,( who is 101 at the beginning of the novel) her brother Randall and his family.  The story takes us from the Guided Age in New York to Anna Freud’s consultation room, to a hippie commune in California and even to Paris. This is a beautifully written, intelligent novel  with a range and complexity that is almost impossible to summarize.
