Showa - Shigeru Mizuki

Shigeru Mizuki's a comics legend in Japan, but relatively unknown in the United States. Thankfully, the recent publication of his four-volume comics history of the Showa era stands to introduce a whole new audience to his work. Covering the entirety of the Showa era (including World War II) Mizuki creates both a compelling popular history as well as a memoir of his own experiences as a dreamer, a (reluctant) solider, and an artist. In the process he illustrates how a country can (through pop culture, societal pressures and a refusal to change) buy so swiftly into militarism that by the time the citizens have realized what they've embraced, it's already too late.
