Signs Preceding the End of the World, by Yuri Herrera

Staff Pick

Herrera's stripped, surreal, and intoxicating novel is masterful in its use of language, exploring both linguistic borders and, through its protagonist Makina, psychological and political borders. When Makina crosses from Mexico to the U.S. to find her brother, Herrera shows us what disappears en route...some of which cannot be recovered. Bringing together elements of  the Aztec myth of the underworld and the beating reality of lived experience, this story is a short and breathless ride. By its end,I found it painful to leave Makina behind and I can't wait to pick up another of this powerful Mexican writer's deceptively brief works again.
