Wytches - Scott Snyder

Witches are where it’s at in 2015. Keep your Twilight’s and your Walking Dead’s. I’ll opt for The Craft and this beautiful piece of graphic novel horror, Scott Snyder’s Wytches. The collection of Wytches 1-6 follows the Rook family after they move to a small New Hampshire town. Soon, the daughter is missing, and the parents have to confront the fact that she may have been abducted by the titular beings. Snyder’s depiction of the monsters is better left experienced than spoiled, but rest assured, it’s sufficiently creepy. Synder’s well-paced story and three-dimensional protagonists are aided by Jock’s surrealist artwork, which owes much to Dave McKean’s expressionistic paints on Batman: Arkham Asylum. Matt Hollingsworth’s colors are similarly effective, splotches of paint contributing to a gnawing sense of disorientation. If you’re looking for something to keep you up a bit at night listening to whistling October winds, look no further—Wytches has you.
