Patti Smith Collected Lyrics, 1970-2015 - Patti Smith

This expanded and updated edition of the 1998 Collected Lyrics marks the 40th anniversary of Smith’s seminal debut album, Horses (which is number forty-four on Rolling Stone‘s list of the 100 Greatest Albums). Smith’s reputation as a poet and artist preceded the iconic music, and all these forms coalesce to produce the definitive, three-hundred-page volume Patti Smith: Collected Lyrics, 1970-2015 (Ecco, $29.99).  This book contains all the singer’s lyrics, including those from thirty-five new and recently-recorded songs, back to Smith’s very first song, written for Janis Joplin in 1970. Other special features include an introduction by the artist, Smith’s original drawings and photographs, and facsimiles of Smith’s handwritten commentary on some of the more controversial and iconoclastic pieces. This is a perfect companion piece for M Train—and an essential volume in the rock-and-roll canon.

Waging Heavy Peace: A Hippie Dream - Neil Young

Neil Young lives in lucid revelry. On matters spiritual, musical, technological, psychotropical (of course), medical and literary he is eloquent if occasionally charmingly loopy. Whatever his passing fancy is, Young will devote whole chapters to it. Whether its his days in the Buffalo Springfield, Crazy Horse, relationships, caring for his sons with cerebral palsy, or cars, there’s a lot of cars. As opposed to sitting across from Keith Richards in a bar or listening to Pete Townshend wax poetically in a coffee shop Waging Heavy Peace reads like your peering over his shoulder while he types it up. For such a heavy rocker he’s absolutely delightful!

The Rap Year Book - Shea Serrano

It’s really hard to describe a book as a “must read.” No matter how good a book is, chances are you can get by without reading. Not this book. If you are a rap fan of any level, a green newcomer or a seasoned vet, you need to read this book. While you won’t get a complete education in rap history per se (only one Outkast song included here, come on) there is more than enough to hang your hat on. To cap it all off is Serrano’s sense of humor and writing style, which is perfectly suited for Twitter but also, as it turns out, translates just fine to the physical page. This is one of my favorite books of 2015…as Shea himself would say, “FOH all other rap books.”
