Diamant's novel depicts the unity found among women and coming of age, as told from the perspective of Dinah, daughter of Jacob and sister of Joseph. Though a minor biblical character, Dinah narrates the intersections between the women in Jacob's tribe. Being the sole daughter despite Jacob's numerous wives, Dinah observes first-hand the womanly rituals within the tribe, and retreats each month to the red tent to partake in the female support and community during menstruation and birth. Though complications arise as Dinah comes of age, Diamant's work provokes readers, in this case female-bodied, to cherish and respect Mother Earth and the strength that often goes unrecognized in relation to femininity and being a woman.
