Family Album: Stories, by Gabriela Alemán

Staff Pick

Alemán's collection of stories gives color and texture to a full tapestry of the Ecuadorian experience. Featuring a wide cast of memorable characters--from murderous spies to treasure hunters (who are literally out of their depth), and luchador movie stars to an American about to learn that the Amazon is not to be trifled with--these brief pieces elicit from the reader not just basic empathy, but emotions ranging from melancholy to laughter, demonstrating Alemán’s talent and confirming her status as an ambassador of Ecuadorian literature.

Eros the Bittersweet, by Anne Carson

Staff Pick

The Dalkey Archives reissue of Carson's outstanding study is as much a major literary event as its initial publication in 1986 was. Carson, a poet, playwright, translator, and classics scholar, delves deep into Ancient Greek literature--primarily Sappho's writings--to illuminate the abiding mysteries of love and desire. Combining research, imagination, and her inimitable flare, Carson dissects words, phrases, fragments, and whole poems, creating not just a masterpiece of literary criticism, but an essay that is itself a work of art.

Saint Sebastian's Abyss, by Mark Haber

Staff Pick

In his sophomore novel Haber explores the nature of obsession and friendship through the lens of two art critics who have hedged their careers on an obscure painter from the Dutch Renaissance and his magnum opus, Saint Sebastian’s Abyss. The narrative follows the self-serious and hilarious antics of these two friends-turned-rivals as they attempt to unlock the meaning of what is, by all accounts, an insignificant work by a raving and perverse madman from the 16th century. With the absurdity of academia and the meaninglessness of capital D discourse as his fodder, Haber has written one of my favorite books of 2022 so far.
