Archie, Volume - Mark Waid

Staff Pick

Contemporary entertainment is used to reboots. Film franchises and television shows are refreshed so often that the word “reboot” is now met with eye-rolls and general annoyance. Comics are no stranger to this phenomenon, as they go through more restarts than perhaps any other medium. A very notable exception Archie Comics, which have gone spiritually unchanged since their inception in 1939…until recently.

Mark Waid and Fiona Staples teamed up to bring America’s Favorite Teenage to a new audience for the first time in his very long life, and they hit a home run. They maintain the happy-go-lucky aw-shucks innocence of Riverdale while simultaneously making it fresh and fun. The degree of difficulty in the task Waid and Staples undertook can’t be underestimated, but they nailed it.

Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me: What Pop Music Rivalries Reveal about the Meaning of Life - Steven Hyden

Staff Pick

Hyden balances anecdotes with phenomenal music criticism, and does more than I was expecting when I opened this book. Instead of merely a surveys course on pop's great rivalries, he digs deeper to discover what type of person takes which side, and why it both does and doesn't matter. Music fans both intense and casual will delight just the same in seeing petty disagreements about The Beatles vs. the Stones (#TeamBeatles), Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West (#TeamKanye), and Jimi Hendrix vs. Eric Clapton (#TeamHendrix) validated both intellectually and philosophically.

Modern Romance - Aziz Ansari

I’m familiar with Aziz’s standup and TV characters, so I picked up Modern Romance expecting to laugh a lot. I did, but what I didn’t count on was how much I would learn. Ansari’s trademark excitable humor acts as a palatable sidekick to a nobler goal than mere comedy. He blends the laughs with some actual sociological insights into relationships in the 21st century—how has technology changed us? What are the differences in the ways millennials pursue love versus the way their grandparents found it? He answers these questions, and raises other important ones for you to dwell on—and still gets you to chuckle the entire time.
