A Ghost in the Throat by Doireann Ní Ghríofa

I've never read a book quite like this one. Part memoir, part analysis of an 18th century Irish poem, and part biography of the poem's author, this book breaks down the space between past and present in revelatory ways. While dealing with the stress of her rapidly growing family, Ni Ghriofa became obsessed with the classic poem Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire, composed orally as the poet's lament on the death of her husband. Ni Ghriofa notes that it's "a tiny miracle that it even exists...lifted to another consciousness by the ordinary wonder of type."

The Cost of Living by Deborah Levy

Staff Pick

In the second installment of her "living autobiography" trilogy, Levy focuses on the experiences of women she has known, admired, or simply observed from a distance throughout her life. From her two teenage daughters—full of quips, sullen silences, and appreciation for their working mother—to the landlady of Levy's writing shed—an elderly widow with a love for Havana rum and one-eyed dogs—the women in Levy's life are painted with vivid color. The other, excellent installments of Levy's autobiography cover her childhood with anti-apartheid activist parents in South Africa and her obsession with creating a new home for herself in later years.

The Husbands by Holly Gramazio

Wouldn't it be easier to jump directly into a long-term marriage than to go through the quotidian horrors of casual dating? When husbands begin spontaneously emerging from the attic in single thirtysomething Lauren's London flat--each one bringing a parallel universe in which she has already married him--she learns the answer is actually no. Video game designer Holly Gramazio combines Groundhog Day and Bridget Jones's Diary in her debut novel for a mind-bending new take on the romantic comedy.
