Know My Name by Chanel Miller

Staff Pick

When her victim impact statement went viral, Miller became known as "Emily Doe." But while working through the complex trauma of her assault and the extended, painful trial that followed, Miller came to feel that reclaiming her name was the only way to reclaim her voice--and her story. The result is this memoir, and it is possibly the best I have ever read. I don't often say that there are books everyone "must" read, but this is one of the few.

Ex-Wife by Ursula Parrott

Staff Pick

Ursula Parrott was at least 50 years ahead of her time—maybe we still haven't caught up with her. Originally published in 1929, this novel tells the story of Patricia, a flapper and working woman who careens into affairs and partying after her husband abandons her. Some of the delightful conversations between Patricia and her best friend could be taken verbatim from Sex and the City or Sally Rooney, but the novel is also sprinkled with fascinating details about life in 1920s Manhattan. It will make you want to put on a dashing Chanel frock and sip crème de menthe cocktails in a smoky speakeasy.

A Month in the Country by J.L. Carr

Staff Pick

Fans of Claire Keegan will love this quiet but powerful novel about a WWI veteran named Tom Birkin who moves to a sleepy English town to restore a medieval mural in the local church. Although he is traumatized by the war, Tom gradually finds himself warming to his new neighbors—particularly an amateur archeologist named Moon and the vicar's shy wife, Alice. Avoiding easy sentimentality, Carr crafts his narrative with the same level of care Tom uses to uncover the mural. When Tom's time in the country ends, neither he nor the reader will ever be quite the same.
