A Tale for The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki

Staff Pick

Ozeki's novel begins with a woman in Alaska discovering a Japanese teenage girl's diary that has washed ashore from the other side of the world; the narrative then follows both the girl's diary and the woman's attempts to find out what happened to her, telling us along the way about the girl's feminist, novel-writing Buddhist nun grandmother; doomed poet-solider great-uncle; and struggling father. I was so gripped and moved by this story about connection across time and continents that I started re-reading the book the same day I finished it.

The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing

Staff Pick

Along with deconstructing and reconstructing the entire novel form, Lessing in her masterwork follows Anna Wulf as she keeps four notebooks: one for her past, one for her politics, one for her love life, and one for her innermost thoughts. As this level of compartmentalization grows unsustainable, Anna careens toward a breakdown that may or may not bring her various selves back together. Arguably the work that secured Lessing the Nobel Prize in Literature some 45 years later, this is my personal choice for the best book ever written.

Bunny by Mona Awad

Staff Pick

Mona Awad takes "dark academia" to hilariously deranged new levels in this story of an all-female writing group at a prestigious MFA program in New England. Our protagonist Samantha is the working-class outsider to the "Bunny" clique, but she gradually finds herself being drawn deeper into their off-kilter world. If a book that combines The Secret History and The Craft sounds good to you, you're in the right place.
