SOUNDINGS by Hali Felt

March 23, 2013

Hali Felt discussed her book, Soundings: The Story of the Remarkable Woman Who Mapped the Ocean Floor, at Politics & Prose on on Saturday, March 23, 2013.

Until the early 1950s, scientists knew little about the ocean floor; most assumed there was nothing there. Then came Columbia University’s geophysical lab, sonar, and Marie Tharp. In this fascinating biography, Felt, who teaches writing at the University of Pittsburgh, profiles a determined and talented woman who, starting at age 28, spent her life translating data into maps, work that was crucial to the development of tectonic-plate theory and continental drift.

During his visit, Bob also shared some of his favorite books, many of which he discovered and read as part of his author interviews for The Washington Post. You can watch Bob's book selections at the video link below.
