Jared Yates Sexton is a journalist who during the 2016 Presidential campaign witnessed the passion at the "Feel the Bern" rallies, the demonstrations outside of the RNC and DNC conventions, the debates, and the Trump rallies where he gained national attention when he started live-tweeting, describing raw anger and vitriol like he had never seen before. Along with the exposure came daily death threats and intimidation. This is a fascinating political read about a campaign that crossed many ethical lines and hit new political lows, with the results flabbergasting almost all the political watchers and commentators.

If you want to read an inspirational memoir about weight loss, this is not that book. Something horrible happened to Roxane at age twelve, and her life fractured into “before” and “after" phases. That event transformed her life, and she began her journey as a fat person. Roxane Gay has no answers. What she has are lots of observations. Observations about what it’s like to move through the world as a morbidly obese woman, to try to feel invisible in that world, and how the world reacts to her. This is a memoir of struggle and shame. As she says, “All of us have to be more considerate of the realities of the bodies of others.”

What happens when a farm in Ireland can only be left to one son? Well, the other sons and daughters reluctantly leave their home and take the voyage across the ocean to begin their new life and seek their fortune in America. They meet up with other homesick Irish in dance halls and begin the work of settling in. This is where we start the story of Nora and Theresa, two sisters who come to America and land in Boston, one forever longing for home and the best friend she left behind, and one determined to have her way in her new world. What happens next will forever bind the two sisters together and eventually force them apart. This is a spectacularly told family drama with a heavy dose of Catholic guilt and determination thrown in. J. Courtney Sullivan’s observations about families and their interactions are so spot-on, it’s hard to believe this author is so young. Saints for All Occasions is a triumph!
