Halpern, whose narrative nonfiction ranges from studies of monarch butterfly migration to the science of memory, here records her own experience as the human part of a therapy-dog team. Her partner is Pransky, an adolescent Labradoodle, and the two visit a county nursing home once a week, dispensing good will and receiving an unexpected bounty of warmth and humor.
